Hello from Brian McGilloway

Hi all
Just thought I should introduce myself: I'm Brian McGilloway and my first novel, Borderlands, was published by MNW in April this year. The follow-up, Gallows Lane, will be published on April 4th 2008 alongside the Pan paperback of Borderlands. I'm currently writing the third Inspector Devlin novel, Bleed a River Deep, which I suspect will feature prominently in future posts on writing and the drafting process.

The Devlin books are being given a series look for the launch in April and now seems as good a time as any to unveil the first of the new covers - this one for the pb edition of Borderlands. Hope you like it...And, in between times, Inspector Devlin makes an appearance in a new short story called The Lost Child, which will be broadcast on Friday 2nd November at 3.30pm on BBC Radio 4.

It's nice to have the chance to blog alongside other writers and, as the Irish cousin of the MNW family, I'm looking forward to finally meeting the rest of the clan...
Brian

Hi Brian, and welcome...

Being half-Irish myself, you're definitely in good company!

Hi, Brian--good to see you in the blogosphere.

The new cover is great. I'm hard-pressed to choose between it and the original. They make a nice pair: both filled with an ominous stillness.

The partial fingerprints all over the title are a nice touch.

Glad you like it. Yes, I think both covers are quite striking. The original cover is an image of the point where the Three Rivers mentioned in the book actually meet. The new image, I think, sets the tone of the book very nicely too. And also fits in very well with the cover of Gallows Lane. But that's for another day.

It's strange seeing the varying covers for the books (Borderlands has now had three here and one in Germany). It's an interesting insight into how your writing triggers someone else creatively in the visual field. And of course, it's interesting to see how elements of the book which perhaps hadn't stood out to you are drawn out by someone else. Or are considered more marketable than others within the book.

The really interesting thing with MNW is the range of cover visuals, matching the range of genres - and I think, so far, none have been repetitive.

Welcome to the blogosphere, Mr McG. I loved Borderlands, and reviewed it for Euro Crime. Very much looking forward to the second -- and hope we don't see any of this "death by fictional character from other book" in it, a spectre raised by Declan on Crime Always Pays recently.

Hi Maxine

Thanks for dropping by and, of course, thanks for your support of Borderlands.

No, the death of Inspector Starret is wildly overexaggerated. It was a joke I made to Declan in passing which he asked to post on the blog. Donegal's more than big and bad enough for at least two Inspectors...

Best
